Lama Surya Das writes in The Big Questions: A Buddhist Response to Life’s Most Challenging Mysteries:

At this point in my life, what is the meaning of life seems to me a slightly misleading question. The meaning of life must be discovered through living. Each of us must find our own meaning. Although we can claim the meaning ascribed by someone else—St. Paul, Mao, Billy Graham, Buddha—we still must live it out for ourselves and reap the genuine satisfactions and fulfillment, or lack of them, depending on our own authenticity. To find our own meaning and purpose of life, we must at some point inquire into certain questions. What is most meaningful to me? What do I care about most? Who or what do I actually devote myself to? What is (my) life all about?
